We’re either guided by Fear or by Love they say.  Fear is the underlying motivator or underlying emotion some say.  Fear is talked a lot in 12 step programs.  In AA they say Fear equals False evidence appearing real a lot.  Another FEAR phrase in AA is ‘Fuck everything and run.’  It is mostly mentioned in Steps 4 and Step 10.  Step 10 says, Continued to take personal inventory and when we were wrong promptly admitted it.  Step 10 essentially just step 4, however it starts with the word Made a Daily Inventory.

Most addicts/alcoholics barely obtain sobriety, let alone do a daily 10th step inventory.  However, the one’s who have a greater success rate tend to do daily Step 10 & Step 11, which has become quite popular, meditation.  I believe the 12 Steps can enhance and benefit ‘normies’ or normal people’s lives too.  Addicts use drugs over fear.  Fear is what causes addicts to pick up a drug.  Fear of not getting something or fear of loosing something. There is a lot of FEAR going around right now as I write this, during the coronavirus pandemic worldwide.

Fear can cause inward pain and stress.

The steps 12 also mentions  GOD, which can be whatever you want it to be for yourself.   It can be nature.  It can stand for ‘Group of Drunks’ or ‘Good Orderly Direction.’  In Step 10 it is mandatory to take a look inward at one’s self and look at your part.  Even if there was a justified harm done to you, you always have a part in it.  Maybe your part is holding onto that hurt, not forgiving, accepting or letting go.

A useful Fear inventory that was shown to me that helped me tremendously was to WRITE it down on paper.  Not only saying it out loud but writing it down on paper.  I put pen to paper

Dear God:

I have Fear,…….

I have Fear,…..of

I have Fear,….that,….

I have Fear,…when,….

I’m resentful,….

I’m resentful,…

And underneath the resentment, there’s always some form of fear, affecting your ego, security or self esteem, etc.

Thank you God for revealing and removing these fears.

I only ask for knowledge of your will for us and the power to carry that out.

-Jen G.  (Then write your name)

You can share this out loud with a Sponsor, spiritual advisor or trusted friend or your ‘God’.  Some people meditate further after doing this step.  In the book of AA, it mentions on page. 84 to do a daily morning meditation.  And a nightly inventory.  Some people do this morning and night.  Some at night.  Everyone in different.  And it may change for you depending on where you are, how sober you are or what’s going on in your life.  I believe even when things are seemingly going well, one should alway keep this practice as a good habit.  Again, the 10th Step starts with the word continued.  It says, Continued to take personal inventory and when we were wrong, promptly admitted it.  So I believe you should always be self aware and continue to take a 10th Step daily, hourly, every minute, continuously if you have to.

On page 84. In the big book it says continue to watch for selfishness, dishonesty, resentment, and fear.  When these crop up, we ask God at once to remove them.  We discuss them with someone immediately and make amends quickly if we have harmed anyone.  Then we resolutely turn our thoughts to someone we can help.

During this time especially for everyone not just addicts, it’s important to acknowledge and express your fears in a healthy way so that they don’t consume you and make you sick.  And for addicts so that they don’t drive you to use drugs.

I hope this information helps you achieve serenity and long-term sobriety too.  You can chose either Fear or Love to feel, move towards, focus on, bring into your life, and to others.
